What The Frack Is happening?
(a polarizing question)
Webinar

Thursday May 17, 2012
3:30 - 4:30pm

Presenter: Dr. Don Duggan-Haas

What the Frack Is Happening?
There’s no such thing as a free megawatt:
the Marcellus Shale, energy and the environment debate.

What is the Marcellus Shale? How did it form? Why so much interest now? Why is the Marcellus Shale so polarizing? This overview -- with special attention to the needs of educators -- describes the geology of the Marcellus, “unconventional” methods for extracting gas from the Marcellus, potential environmental and economic consequences of exploiting this resource, and how those consequences compare to other energy sources we are using now or might likely use in the near future.
Google Earth files and other session materials will be made available to participants.

Registration Is Closed

Don Duggan-Haas is the Education Research Associate at the Paleontological Research Institution and its Museum of the Earth. He has taught middle school and high school science, and science education at the undergraduate and graduate level. At PRI, he leads teacher professional development, works in curriculum materials development, and engages in educational research all of this work focuses upon the fundamental ideas that are most important for everyone to understand about the Earth system and how to help educators nurture understandings of those ideas. He’s grown especially interested in technology-rich place-based education – an approach that engages learners in the close study of their local environment and using these locally grounded understandings to better understand the global Earth system. Recent work focuses on energy and climate.
